APRIL 2018 PERMITS SOAR TO HIGHEST LEVEL FOR APRIL SINCE 2006

Based on residential permit data compiled by the Home Builders Association of Southeastern Michigan (HBA) and reported in the HBA Southeastern Michigan Residential Building Activity
Report, a total of 496 single-family permits were issued in Macomb, Oakland, St. Clair and Wayne counties in April 2018. The result was up 5 percent from March (473), up 13 percent from April 2017 (441) and brings the year-to-date total to 1,521 for the second best start to a year since 2006.

Builder Confidence Climbs to 8-Month High in November

Builder confidence in the market for newly-built single-family homes rose two points to a level of 70 in November on the NAHB/Wells Fargo Housing Market Index (HMI). This was the highest report since March, and the second highest on record since July 2005.

“November’s builder confidence reading is close to a post-recession high — a strong indicator that the housing market continues to grow steadily,” said NAHB Chairman Granger MacDonald. “However, our members still face supply-side constraints, such as lot and labor shortages and ongoing building material price increases.”

Builder Confidence Posts Solid Gain in October

Builder confidence in the market for new single-family homes rose four points to 68 in October on the NAHB/Wells Fargo Housing Market Index (HMI). This was the highest reading since May.

“This month’s report shows that home builders are rebounding from the initial shock of the hurricanes,” said NAHB Chairman Granger MacDonald. “However, builders need to be mindful of long-term repercussions from the storms, such as intensified material price increases and labor shortages.”

New Home Sales Edge Higher in June

Sales of newly built, single-family homes in June inched up 0.8% to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 610,000 units from a downwardly revised May reading, according to newly released data by HUD and the U.S. Census Bureau.

“Although we saw modest gains this month, new home sales have risen nearly 11% since the start of 2017,” said NAHB chairman Granger MacDonald. “Our members remain optimistic as the single-family housing market continues to recover.”
